Matthew 6:33...a very familiar one...

Let's look at Matthew 6:33 - a very familiar verse that is quoted often, it reads,

"But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."

The word "but" makes you look back because it is a word that means your action is to be opposite or different than what was previously stated.  That is found in verse 31,

"Do not worry then, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear for clothing?'

So instead of worrying about these things Jesus gives more support in verse 32,

"For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things."

Jesus is saying that your heavenly Father has what you eat and what you drink and what you wear covered so... or "but"... and then we are at verse 33.

"seek first" - hmmm this is going to take priority

"His kingdom and His righteousness" - now my attention is not on what I need but on what God sees and what matters to God and what God does and who God is

"and all these things will be added to you." - what we eat, drink, and wear will come from God and we will keep our focus that they are truly coming from Him

Where is the focal point of this verse?  "His kingdom and His righteousness"
God's kingdom is made up of who?  those who are saved
How did those get saved?  through the righteousness of God sending His Son, Jesus Christ and the full definition of the gospel
My focus needs to be on the opportunities that God gives me to share about the kingdom of God and His righteous with the world around me.

Big question?  Does this come first in your life?  I just changed my morning prayer this morning.  How about you?

"God, give me an open door to share with someone today about Your kingdom and Your righteousness.  Amen."
