Romans 10:16,17 says,...

Here are some thoughts from a session by Mark Dever at the Magnify Conference in East Lansing, MI last weekend.  Adam's notes...

Today's verses are from a conference I attended last weekend in East Lansing, MI.  They are Romans 10:16, 17 which reads,

16 - "However, they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says, 'Lord, who has believed our report?'
17 - So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ."

Here are some thoughts from one of the sessions.

First is the point.  That is found in the last word of these two verses, "Christ."  This is the point of it all.  This is Who we point to.  Christ is the centrality of the message and we have no message without Him.

Second is the proclamation.  How do we know of the point, "Christ?"  "...and hearing by the word of Christ.", is the answer.  The message of Jesus has to be proclaimed in some way or form.  This is why the preaching and teaching of Christ in our Sunday School classes and Bible studies and Sunday morning worship is so necessary to be a "Christian" church in the true sense of the word.

Third is the problem.  "However, they did not all heed the good news;..."  In the midst of sharing this message of Christ, which is the good news, some will not heed it or hear it.  To hear or heed is not just merely audibly hearing the message but taking it in, obeying it, believing it, and accepting God.  Not all will do that.  This can be very discouraging at times especially when the message is not heeded by those that are closest to you.

Fourth is the promise.  "So faith comes from hearing,..."  Hearing what?  The message of Christ.  To say another way, faith only comes through this message of Christ and the hearing of it.  When we share the message of Christ through personal evangelism or through public worship and gatherings, it gives the opportunity for us to see faith in Christ come alive.

To sum it up:  No faith comes but by this message (Christ) being spoken.  Therefore we need to break our silence on this.  The angels broke the silence to the shepherds in the fields outside of Bethlehem and they (the shepherds) went and they sought Jesus out and worshiped Him.  We will have opportunities to break the silence and share the message that some will reject or not receive but some will receive it but only when they have the opportunity to hear it.

I am thankful that the message of Christ can go out is so many ways today.  Radio, internet, books, weekly worship services, news print, dramas, movies, and it seems the list is endless and we should be utilizing them all but do not discount because there are so many ways the opportunity to speak one on one with another about the King of kings and the Lord of lords of your life.
