Psalm 8:3-8 says...
Today's verses are Psalm 8:3-8 which reads,
"When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,The moon and the stars, which You have ordained;
What is man that You take thought of him,And the son of man that You care for him?Yet You have made him a little lower than God,And You crown him with glory and majesty!You make him to rule over the works of Your hands;
You have put all things under his feet.All sheep and oxen,
And also the beasts of the field,The birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea,
Whatever passes through the paths of the seas."
At first glance this looks like a lot of responsibility that is a reminder of Adam and Eve's instructions in the garden. It attributes creation to God and then moves to us humbly looking at our part with what God has created.
Your grandparent passed away and at the reading of the will you find out that you have received an item that they created that has some historical importance to the community or to your family. You have been entrusted with something that they have made and the preservation of it until it is passed on to another.
I love watching the Antique Roadshow. Someone will bring in such an item and it doesn't matter if the item is worth a million dollars or a few pennies, the person will say something like, "Well that is good to know, but it will stay on the wall or in the family; it was passed down to me and I will pass it down to my children."
I think we can make a case that we have had abuses in the past and the present of what God has given to us to preserve for future generation and that we need to continue to do a better job at being considerate and caring about the creation of God.
As I recognize God as the Creator of all and have been given that position to rule over that creation, I have to ask what it means to "rule?" I would think coming from God that it would be the best definitions of that word and the fullness of that word. A good ruler is just and compassion and humble and passionate and confesses and repents and leads and leans on God and a whole bunch more.
Now one more thought - from the New Testament, Jesus entrusts us with the gospel. This is something He created and gave His very life to fulfill. In the past, there have been abuses of it but we have the opportunity today to show it with our very lives in a better light. It is to be preserved in its fullest form for the next generation and you as a Christian have been given a precious gift. Humbly take care of it through your very life.
