Zechariah 14:9-15 says...

Today's verses are Zechariah 14:9-15, which read,

v.9 - And the LORD will be king over all the earth; in that day the LORD will be the only one, and His name the only one.

In our last study we were talking about the coming of the Lord.  The Lord will provide provision for the remnant who trust in Him and He will provide punishment for those who go against Him.  Now we read that a reign of the Lord is coming which is over all the earth and His reign will be supreme.  He is the only Lord and His name is the only name.  Let's cross reference to Revelation 11:15 which reads,

Then the seventh angel sounded, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever."

We also think of John 14:6 and Jesus' words,

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me."

And also Philippians 2:9-11, which reads,

For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

v.10, 11 - All the land will be changed into a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem; but Jerusalem will rise and remain on its site from Benjamin's Gate as far as the place of the First Gate to the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the king's wine presses.  People will live in it, and there will no longer be a curse, for Jerusalem will dwell in security.

The reign of the Lord will bring stability to the earth.  It will also change the earth.  Places that were mountainous will now be made into plains for the glory of God.  Jerusalem, the city much fought over, will remain and Zechariah gives us all these different gates of the city wall to signify its boundaries to the north, south, east, and west.  The curse will be gone and the people will live in security that the Lord is there and in total control.

v.12-15 - Now this will be the plague with which the LORD will strike all the peoples who have gone to war against Jerusalem; their flesh will rot while they stand on their feet, and their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongue will rot in their mouth.  It will come about in that day that a great panic from the LORD will fall on them; and they will seize one another's hand, and the hand of one will be lifted against the hand of another.  Judah also will fight at Jerusalem; and the wealth of all the surrounding nations will be gathered, gold and silver and garments in great abundance.  So also like this plague will be the plague on the horse, the mule, the camel, the donkey and all the cattle that will be in those camps.

With the Lord's coming is the Lord's judgment.  These are hard verses to read but our just God will right the wrongs.  He will show His sovereignty over all.  Many times the enemies of the Lord ended up turning upon themselves.  The livestock were also used in battle so the Lord will remove that tool to be used against the people of God.  He will take away their might, flesh; He will take away their sight, eyes; and He will take away voice, tongue.  Those who were fierce will now be in fear and those who plundered others will be plundered themselves.

So what do we take away from this verses this morning?  One thing is that there is a Day of the Lord coming.  Another would be that His reign is to be supreme.  The Lord is intensely concerned about His people, His family, being provided for with security against their enemies.  Lastly, His warnings are not to be taken lightly.  The hard to read details are given to grab our attention to be aware of God.  We need to live lives in glory to the One who will provide provision and protection rather than disregard His words to follow Him as our one and only God.  Let us pray.

"Lord, the time for You to be our one and only is not in the future but right now.  May we do away with anything that has captured our attention and compromised Your rightful place in our lives.  May there be comfort in the midst of Your judgment because we are seeking You and You alone.  Amen."
