Proverbs 4:6-9 says,...

Today's verses are Proverbs 4:6-9, which read,

v.6 - Do not forsake her, and she will guard you; love her, and she will watch over you.

Solomon goes back to speaking of wisdom with the personal pronoun "her."  It takes the value of wisdom to another level rather than referring to this valuable commodity as an "it."  We are given two commands here and two promises about wisdom.  The commands are to not forsake her and to love her.  The promises are the guarding and watching over  that wisdom will do for you if you do not forsake and love her.

I know that we learn much from our mistakes and when we fall down and have to get back up.  Sometimes we learn from our failures and we attend the school of hard knocks.  The Bible is not refuting that method but it is also giving us another way to look at what is available to us to proactively put in place to not fall down.  Wisdom is something to actively walk in the path of, not forsake, and cherish with a hug, love.  Being that close to wisdom brings its guarding and watching effects that we are able to learn from her instead of not giving attention and affection to her and falling flat on our faces.

v.7 - The beginning of wisdom is:  acquire wisdom; and with all your acquiring, get understanding.

Go after wisdom.  If you are going to have wisdom then you need to first desire her to seek after her.  Wisdom might be spoken of and be all around you but you need to open your ears to hear and your mind to take in what is being shared from God's word.  You purposely put yourself in a place to acquire more of the wisdom and the understanding of God.  Do you desire to know God more?  What are you actively doing to know Him more?  These are two good questions to ask ourselves today.

v.8, 9 - Prize her, and she will exalt you; she will honor you if you embrace her.  She will place on your head a garland of grace; she will present you with a crown of beauty.

Don't forsake wisdom; love wisdom; acquire wisdom; prize wisdom; and embrace wisdom.  All of these actions place upon us to more than just lounging about in the easy chair and waiting for it to come to us.  Guard you; watch over you; understanding to you; exalt you; and honor you.  All these results are definitely in the positive to your overall life.  Wisdom does not have a down side when sought after.

Grace and beauty will be what describes and defines your life in front of others when you acquire wisdom.  To be described by others as someone who possesses grace and gives grace and is graceful in dealing with others and situations would be a great compliment.  To be described by others as someone who displays beauty and sees the beauty in all and brings beauty to the situation at hand would be another great compliment.  The Scriptures are saying that those who do not forsake wisdom but love her, acquire her, prize her, and embrace her will have these laid upon them, grace and beauty.  They are upon our heads to be seen and experiences by others but not put there by ourselves.  God places them there as we actively seek out wisdom to follow after her.  Let's pray.

"Lord, may we desire to have those adornments given to us of grace and beauty by You.  May we see that they come with the following after of Your wisdom that brings nothing but good to our lives.  Again, we pray to put ourselves in position and have systems in place in our lives to receive the wisdom, understanding, and knowledge of You.  Amen."
