Proverbs 2:20-22 says,...
Today our verses are Proverbs 2:20-22 which read,
v.20 - So you will will walk in the way of good men and keep to the paths of the righteous.
A different path is set for the upright and a different crowd is to be around. The fool goes the way of darkness and hangs around those with perverse words and ways. The wise puts himself or herself in step with those who are good by God's standards and follows their lead as they follow after the Lord.
This is a command of God. "So you will walk" are His words to us. It is not "it would be good if you would" or "I kind of wish you would" or "what will be will be" but rather this is a direct command to put yourself with a godly crowd on the path of uprightness. Remember, our faith is not passive but active and we "work out our salvation" by living it out following God's wisdom.
v.21 - For the upright will live in the land and the blameless will remain in it;...
Here are two words that describe God's family, "upright" and "blameless." Those who follow after God's words and ways will be described as upright and blameless because we follow after a holy God. One of the definitions for the root word to be upright is to be lawful. One of the definitions for the root word to be blameless is to be complete. God's family is made lawful by Him sending His Son to pay the price for our salvation so that we can be complete.
The result is living in the land that God is preparing for us and to be able to remain in it with Him. Here comes the opposite.
v.22 - But the wicked will be cut off from the land and the treacherous will be uprooted from it.
We go from the description words of "upright and blameless" to "wicked and treacherous." The unwise or the fool will not reside in the land prepared by God and will actually be removed from the common grace of God given to all. This speaks of a judgment by God to come. There will be a day when those who follow after someone other than God will not be able to be in His presence.
Again, this is a command or a direct statement of what is going to happen as a fact and not a prediction that could be right or wrong. God is laying down the facts of what happens to those who are wise because they are following after the ways of the Lord and those who are foolish because they are following after their own ways which mirror the ways of Satan.
Who are you walking with? What path are you on? Are those you are walking with upright and blameless? Does the path you are on lead to more righteousness and not less? What do you need to do if you are walking with those who are not moving you to follow closer to God? I think the wise answer is a simple one. Get yourself around those who are walking with God. That is a great plug to be church with God's family on a regular basis as a priority in your life. Let's pray.
"Lord, our company does matter. We need good godly brothers and sisters in Christ to walk with through this life. Thank You for others that You put in our path to be a witness to but thank You for those You put around us that encourage us to be holy as You are holy. Help us to put ourselves in a place to receive daily and weekly contact with the influence of others following after You. Amen."
