Jeremiah 23:5, 6 says,
Today's verses are Jeremiah 23:5, 6 which read,
5 - "Behold, the days are coming," declares the LORD, "When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch; and He will reign as king and act wisely and do justice and righteousness in the land.
6 - In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely; and this is His name by which He will be called, 'The LORD our righteousness.'"
The verses before this passage are speaking about false shepherds (spiritual leaders) leading the sheep (Israel, God's people) away from God. God would gather the remnant (those who hear God's voice) back and raise up other shepherds (faithful spiritual leaders) to tend them.
The verses following this passage are speaking about a change of focus from the event of the Exodus when Israel was delivered from the hands of Pharaoh and guided to the Promise Land to a new event to focus on of the remnant coming back to the land of Israel from all over the world.
These verses today are sandwiched between that explain something that needs to happen for the hearers to go from false shepherds to true shepherds and from the focus of a past event to the focus of a future event.
What needs to happen is the rising up of the Branch (or shoot) from the line of David that will be a king. The words indicate that this one will grow up among the people. He will bring salvation and security and His name will be called out.
He is described as a "righteous Branch." He is described with the words "...righteous..., ...act wisely..., ...do justice..." which rounds out how this king will reign.
But what He is called is "The LORD our righteousness." Not only is He righteous but He becomes "our" righteousness. It must be that our righteousness is not enough and we need the righteousness of another, namely this coming king from the line of David. This would be that pivotal point in history that would take our focus off the Exodus event and to the coming of this new king.
We know that righteous King who became "our" righteousness as Jesus.
