Proverbs 1:20-23 says,....
Today's verses are Proverbs 1:20-23, which read,
v.20, 21 - Wisdom shouts in the street, she lifts her voice in the square; at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the gates in the city she utters her sayings:...
Here is an important principle about wisdom, it is not something hidden from us. Wisdom is shouted; it is lifted; it cries out; and it utters. Wisdom is in the street, the square, and the gates of the city. Wisdom is vocally being known and also in the most public places. It is not to be hidden from us.
When we step back from a situation or you are a third party observer to something, wisdom seems to scream at us what is the wise thing to do. It is talking to us in our minds when making the decision of what is to do next. Sometimes it is screaming at us in our heads of the godly action that needs to happen.
Do you follow it? The obvious answer from Scripture, do you take it from knowledge of chapter and verse to the actual practice of applied wisdom? Sometimes it is unpopular to follow godly wisdom. Sometimes you have to correct what you haven't done before because you shut off the Holy Spirit screaming and crying out to you what should be done. Sometimes you have to ask the question, "Am I really loving myself and those around me and God if I don't follow the godly wisdom given to me even when it is hard and makes me bury my pride on my knees humbly bowing to His words and ways?" The proverbs goes on to say.
v.22, 23 - "How long, O naive ones, will you love being simple-minded? And scoffers delight themselves in scoffing and fools hate knowledge? Turn to My reproof, behold, I will pour out My Spirit on you; I will make My words known to you."
First you start out as naive, simple-minded about the situation and ignorant of what is going on. Is it right or wrong? You don't know unless it is pointed out to you or you are made aware of it.
Then you go to being a scoffer as you refuse the wisdom given about the situation. You find out what is right and wrong and you scoff at it or mock it instead of yielding to correction. You make excuses or you deny the full affect of sin and what is to be done with it.
Finally you are at the point of being a fool who will not listen to the truth. You hate God's knowledge given to you and it is just knowledge to you. It is not wisdom to be followed after. It is just another truth to be obeyed or not and you choose not. "It might be right for you but it is not right for me" is the phrase said by you when dealing even with Scripture.
Where are you in this situation that is screaming godly wisdom to you wherever you are at? Are you at the naive stage and just realized it and need to decide to follow or not? Are you at the scoffer stage and you have the knowledge but decide to make excuses not to follow? Are you at the fool stage where you have put together your own earthly wisdom instead of following God's wisdom?
God gives the instruction through this proverbs to "turn to" Him at this decision point. See the sin and repent to receive His Spirit and to understand more of His words. Isn't this what we should want?
We are in the depth of a sinful situation and needing to know what to do. God shouts at us from His word and from others who He has put over us to guide us and be concerned about our spiritual lives preaching the right corporately and privately to us. It would seem if you are naive that his decision to follow God instruction would be easier than if you were a scoffer or a fool. Will you turn to God? Will you see that you need His Spirit and you need more of His words known to you? Or will you follow your own spirit and make up your own words to try to solve the sin that is before you? What will you do? Let's pray.
"Lord, thank You for shouting and lifting up Your voice. Thank You for crying out and uttering into our souls Your truth to be followed. May we obey and repent to receive Your Spirit upon us to understand more of the words of You that we need to put into the practice of wisdom. Naive, scoffer, or fool, help us to see where we are to turn to You. Amen."
