Jude 8-10 says...

Today's verses are Jude 8-10, which read,

v.8 - Yet in the same way these men, also by dreaming, defile the flesh, and reject authority, and revile angelic majesties.

Jude is warning his readers about false teachers who have "crept in unnoticed" in the church.  Yesterday he gave three Old Testament examples of what happens to those who follow the path of unbelief.  It is not a neutral position.  Not only does this position cause God to act against it but it leads them down a path farther and farther from God.

Jude is now pointing back to those false teachers, "in the same way these men."  Some characteristics and actions are given here that they are participating in.  Instead of sharing the Word of God and the Gospel, they were sharing their dreams.  Instead of honoring the body that God had given them as a temple of the Holy Spirit, they were defiling the flesh.  Instead of submitting to God's authority, they were rejecting it and following the way of the fallen angels.

v.9 - But Michael the archangel, when he disputed with the devil and argued about the body of Moses, did not dare pronounce against him a railing judgment, but said, "The Lord rebuke you!"

Jude gives his readers another example of doing what is right.  Michael, the archangel, has that title because of the great responsibility that God has put upon him much like Gabriel that brought the announcement of baby Jesus.  Even with that position, when it came to dealing with Satan over the body of Moses, Michael didn't say to Satan, "Hey, don't you know who I am?  I'm the great Michael, the archangel of God.  You better listen to me."  Michael instead stands under the submission of the One who sent him and told Satan, "The Lord rebuke you!"  The glory and the power are the Lord's alone.

v.10 - But these men revile the things which they do not understand; and the things which they know by instinct, like unreasoning animals, by these things they are destroyed.

"But these men" is a reference again to the false teachers.  These false teachers do not go with the wisdom of God but rather with instinct and no different than a stubborn animal not following the commands of its master.  What happened to an animal in Jesus' day that didn't follow the commands of its master?  If the animal could not be trained then it was done away with in some way or another.  The false teacher will have consequences for this unbelief that leads to further disobedience of God and drawing others to doubt.  Again, this shows the work of Satan.

This may be hard to read but Jude is showing his readers in great detail the consequences of not following God.  He will do this until we get to verse 17 when he says, "But you, beloved,..."  This total allegiance or total surrender to Jesus Christ is the mark of a genuine Christian and nothing less.

"Lord, may I not fall and give myself glory when You are the recipient of it.  Actually, help me to give all the glory to You all the time.  May I bow to Your will and Your way and be so thankful for all that You have provided.  Your written Word is the lamp and light that You provided for me to follow.  Amen."
