1 John 5:16, 17 says,...

Today's verses are 1 John 5:16, 17 which read,

"If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask and God will for him give life to those who commit sin not leading to death.  There is a sin leading to death; I do not say that he should make request for this.  All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin not leading to death."

A very heavy subject for Sunday morning.  John told us yesterday that we can "know" that we have eternal life and that we can "know" of intimate prayer with God.

John now introduces a situation in which you should pray for and in His will for others.

A brother (we assume a Christian brother by the context) is committing a sin not leading to death.  All sin is sin and all sin has consequences that will be suffered for it.  Those consequences and the effects of sin are what is different.  A sin leading to physical death in the Bible were situations when someone was opening and knowingly defying God.  There are times in the Bible when God takes that person out of the picture.  You can see by the events unfolding that this is necessary for the rest of the body of believers.

John is saying that we need to pray for those committing sin that is not leading to death.  Our brothers and sisters who are walking down the wrong path but may not see the affects of it or understand the pull of Satan that is behind their actions.  We are to plead to God for these to see God clearly so they can walk to Him instead of away from Him.

There is quite a difference between the one who is knowingly and defiantly going against what God says and one who is walking the broad road and needs to find the narrow path again.

Sin is sin and John states that all unrighteousness is sin.  All sin needs to be confessed and ask for forgiveness and has consequences even after the forgiveness has been granted.  Be praying for those who are "playing around" with sin or those who are under the influence of those who are openly and knowingly going against and mocking God.  Those need to be rescued and prayed for.

"Lord, may I become more sensitive of You and also of sin so that I may walk closer to You and farther from sin.  May I put on my prayer list those who have wandered away from a closeness that they had with You and allowed sin to have a bigger place in their lives.  May my heart break to reach out with and to You to see them rescued.  Amen."
