WILDERNESS VALLEY — In a house not much farther than a 7-iron shot away from Wilderness Valley golf course, lives 17-year-old Jason Wolfgang with his parents, Adam and Stephanie Wolfgang.

Jason recently has signed on to play golf for Spring Arbor University, near Flint.

“I chose Spring Arbor because it’s close to home and they have the program I want to go into,” Wolfgang said.

It sounds like a statement that any young man makes when making a higher education choice, but Wolfgang has taken a unique path to play golf at college.

Even though his rounds of golf are consistently in the lower 80s, his name has never been displayed in the Herald Times sports section as a high school athlete.

Wolfgang has never been on an organized team. He has never had a full-time coach. With exception of few clinics, he has never had a lesson.

The Wolfgangs have home-schooled all three of their children, two of which maintained the minimum level of high school enrollment to participate in sports at Gaylord High School.

Jason and the family’s decision to be a full-time home-schooler would not prevent him from gravitating to sports.

“He loved to be outdoors when he was younger,” Adam said. “He would stand in the backyard and drive golf balls into the woods.”

“Until one bounced off of a tree and hit the house,” added Stephanie, smiling.

Jason participated in the Gaylord Area Junior Golf Association (GAJUGA) when younger, but the majority of his game has been learned while doing.

Adam admitted that he is not a daily golfer.

“He used to be my caddie before I could carry my clubs,” said Jason. “He supported me by reminding me of different fundamentals that I had learned.”

Utilizing a minimal amount of instruction, it seems that his development is going well.

After attending an orientation at Spring Arbor, Jason inquired about trying out for the golf team. The next visit he met with head golf coach, Dave Mayotte. After playing a round of golf with Jason on a third visit, Mayotte offered the young man a partial scholarship.

“It’s not very often that someone can come out of nowhere and compete at this level, but Jason does a lot of things right with his golf swing,” said Mayotte in a recent Spring Arbor release. “He has a lot of upside to his game.”

Adam and Stephanie, both graduates of Spring Arbor, are pleased with the path that Jason has chosen.

“We are so extremely proud of him, that he has responded to his calling to go into ministry.” Stephanie said. “He was made to interact with people.”

Jason will be entering the youth ministry and business programs.
