One verse, 2 Peter 3:10 says....

Today's verse is 2 Peter 3:10, which reads,

v.10 - But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.

Peter is speaking his last words and using them to warn his listeners about false teachers and leaders.  They have been mocking that Jesus is coming again and the end of the world as we know it.  Peter's readers have "fallen asleep" on the place of the Word of God in their lives and they are being carried away with all this talk of it not happening.  Peter lets them know that God has all power, all authority, and is in control of timing of what is to come next.  Peter now gives some more word pictures to help understand this truth.

"The day of the Lord..." - signifies a specific day when these events will come about and as it says, it will come about because and by the Lord.

"...come like a thief,..." - It will be a surprise arrival.  The question is what will the "thief" (the day of the Lord) find when He comes in your life?  Will he find you serving and devoted to Him or will He find you sleeping spiritually?

"...the heavens will pass away with a roar..." - Have you been around a very large bonfire or around a very large house fire?  It roars.  That type of fire is consuming everything in its path.  Peter is saying that all that is here will be burned up.

"...the elements will be destroyed with intense heat,..." - The elements, the atomic components that things are made of at the molecular level, will be be divided and destroyed.  The matter that God created will be no more down to the building blocks of atoms, neutrons, protons, and electrons.  You thought you would never use that Chemistry again but here it is in the Bible!

"...the earth and its works will be burned up." - This day of the Lord will be complete.  Heaven and earth and all its works will be destroyed by fire.  I do not need to tell you that this fact is stated all over the Bible from the Old Testament to the New Testament.

Why is this fact important to know and not let "escape" from us?  We do not live for "this world" but for another.  I don't live for the "weekend", I live for the "new heaven and the new earth" that will be to come.  I live my life in light of that fact.  Therefore His ways and His words and not only higher than mine but also anything that this world and its false leaders and teachers lure us with.

It sounds like a "hot" end to it all but the question still remains, "How will He find you on the day of the Lord?"  The time to answer that question in the affirmative is right now.  Live today and everyday in light of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross and the victory of the empty tomb to say "I'm ready and living my life in light of Your return."

Peter says to not forget about this fact.  Have you forgotten it lately or put it on the back burner of your mind and life?  We bring to the front burner of the stove to keep an eye on it.  Let's put Jesus there and everything He says.
