2 Peter 1:12-15 says,...
Today's verses are 2 Peter 1:12-15 which read,
v.12 - Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in the truth which is present with you.
What are "...these things..." again that Peter is reminding us of even though we know them and are solid Christians? They are the things mentioned back in verses 5-7. Here is that long run-on sentence again. We are to build our faith in Christ Jesus with our virtuous thought life that leads to more knowledge of God that leads to strength during times of temptations that leads to a more consistent life obeying Him that leads to an ever increasing reverence and respect of who God is and what He says that leads to a love for your brothers and sisters in Christ, a love that is between good friends to a love that has deep commitment to one another like at the wedding altar. This is what Peter is reminding us "church-going" Christians of that have great consequences if we follow or not. Again, we are to be diligent (with haste) to do these things to build the faith we have.
v.13, 14 - I consider it right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder, knowing that the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.
Peter is telling them that he is going to die soon. He was told by Jesus on the seashore that he would die for the faith in John 21:18, 19. So this reminder and message are some of his final words to his brothers and sisters in Christ. I think this adds a "little" weight to the content to us.
v.15 - And I will also be diligent that at any time after my departure you will be able to call these things to mind.
Peter is going to continue to live this life of glorifying Christ and preaching the message of the Gospel in such a way that even though he is gone, that they would remember "...these things..." I wonder what his plan was. He was already writing this letter but it seems bigger or more comprehensive than this but here it is in the canonize Bible that we read today.
What strikes me is in thinking of today that this is more important than anything else to Peter. It is more important than their comfort. It is more important than their provisions. It is more important than their happiness. Them hearing and being reminded of what Jesus Christ did and our response to be ever-increasing in that faith was more important than anything else. Wow, is that true with us today? Is the message of Jesus that comes out of us and our churches more important than anything else that we do and say?
What efforts am I putting forth to say the same kind of statement that Peter is saying here to his readers, "...that at any time after my departure you will be able to call these things to mind?" I would say that we need to "up" our efforts in this area (at home, at church, at work, at play, at school) if that is what is going to come to mind when we are gone.
