Proverbs 6:16-19 says,...

Today's verses are Proverbs 6:16-19, which read,

v.16 - There are six things which the LORD hates, yes, seven which are an abomination to Him:

Solomon has been giving instruction to his sons about those who we can get wrapped up with and pulled into their consequences.  He has been slowing turning this conversation to go from focus on them and their foolish ways to looking at ourselves and the adaptation of some of their ways.  He is going to give his sons a very important list.

These seven things the Lord hates and are an abomination to Him.  The Lord hates them because they are in opposition to Him.  They are enemies to what God wants us to be.  They are an abomination to Him because they produce disgusting and wicked results.  What are these seven things?

v.17-19 - Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that run rapidly to evil, a false witness who utters lies, and one who spreads strife among brothers.

  1. Haughty eyes is another way of saying the sin of pride.  Pride is the exalting or lifting up of oneself.  The sin of pride or puffing oneself up never brings us closer to God.
  2. A lying tongue is a practice that is prevalent in our world.  We flatter each other with untruths and publish claims that are not so.  A lying tongue has no place for God's truth to come out.
  3. Hands that shed innocent blood make me think of the abortion industry.  Who are the most innocent by our standards are those who are most vulnerable.  God hates abortion, it is an abomination to Him just as it is for us when we hear of some adult taking advantage of a minor child.
  4. A heart that devises wicked plans is someone who is not just wicked but planning to do more wicked things.  They are looking for ways to harm others with words and actions.
  5. Feet that run rapidly to evil is the direction that they are going in life.  They are on the broad way of the foolish where you can run easily and not on the narrow path of the wise where you need to concentrate on each step to be in your Master's.
  6. A false witness who utters lies takes the lying tongue to a new level.  This person lies but also does so in a legal setting, a court room.  These lies bring about legal consequences to those who are innocent.  Legal consequences could result in imprisonment or even death.
  7. One who spreads strife among brothers is gossip in the church.  This is something that God hates and is an abomination to Him.  This is something that opposes Him and is disgusting to Him.  Gossip brings contention to life where unity should be.

If these are the unholy seven then what are the holy seven that God loves and are a delight to Him?

We are to have humble eyes that see God and others as those to love.  We are to have truthful tongues in our conversations.  We are to have hands that reach out to the most vulnerable.   We are to have a heart that spends it time planning our next good deed in the name of God for others.  We are to have feet steadily walking in the way of holiness.  We are to be a truthful witness that will help others administer justice.  We are to be one who brings unity to the church by not spreading gossip but God's grace.

Have you seen a place where you are leaning into an area that God hates and is an abomination to Him?  May we realize that God is not indifferent about these unholy actions but actually really upset when we participate in them.  May we also remember than none of these actions can be made by us to enhance our spiritual relationship with God, they are opposed to it.  If we are making an excuse or rationalization with any of these seven then we are on the way and not the path.   Let's pray.

"Lord, You make known these seven sins that You hate.  You have not hidden them from us but exposed them so that we can easily identify if we are not where You want us to be.  We confess of pride and lying and not caring about the innocent and wicked plans and evil ways and public lies and gossip.  We repent to be followers of You who are humble, truthful, caring, thoughtful, intentional, of integrity and grateful.  May what we do and say be things that You love and are a delight for You to witness.  Amen."
