1 Corinthians 7:6-9 says,...
Today's verses are 1 Corinthians 7:6-9, which read,
v.6, 7 - But this I say by way of concession, not of command. Yet I wish that all men were even as I myself am. However, each man has his own gift from God, one in this manner, and another in that.
Paul is writing to the Christians in Corinth about being holy with an "h" single and holy married. If you are single then your life should be a beacon for God and if you are married then your life should be also a beacon for God. For Paul, the gospel is so important that no matter if you are married or if you are single it is to be the focus and supported by whatever box you fill in on the form, single or married.
Paul is single and serving the Lord and he is encouraging others to be the same because of the spread of the gospel. He is able to go more easily the corners of the world because he does not have commitments of married life. He is not trying to pit one status over another but give validation to both when living it as God says to. In reality the holy married couple could be raising up holy singles to send out to the world with the gospel.
v.8, 9 - But I say to the unmarried and to widows that it is good for them if they remain even as I. But if they do not have self-control, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
Paul encourages those who are presently single, unmarried, divorced and the widows to stay that way for the cause of the gospel. When Paul talks about those who have never married he uses another word. He is speaking to many who have been divorced and searching for what to do and he will get more into this topic in tomorrow's devotional. The unholy Corinthian culture has led to many who have been divorced but now are Christians.
Paul's focus is always on following God's ways. So, if someone is being tempted to do something unholy as listed in chapter 6 then it would be better to make things right by God's way in light of a proper marriage relationship than participate in something that is against His will.
The ultimate passion that is to burn within us is to be for Christ. Other passions will try to take His place but a truly holy single person and a truly holy married person will fuel that passion rather than diminish it. A simple take away today is to follow Christ's commands which are the same in the area of sexual immorality for both the single, the unmarried, the widows, and the married.
"Lord, how important it would be for us to be so focused on the gospel that we would not let anything of the world get in its way or hinder its progress because of the conduct of our lives. You want my words and my actions to reflect You to the world and You give me the instruction and the love to display You to my world. May I heed to the greatest love and the greatest passion of my life today. Amen."
