1 Corinthians 10:6-13 says,...
Today's verses are 1 Corinthians 10:6-13, which read,
v.6 - Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved.
In our last study, Paul brought up the Biblical example of the Exodus to the Christians in Corinth. The Israelites being delivered by God from the Egyptians were given so much from God but they rejected full devotion and wanted the old life. They were disqualified from going into the Promise Land. The Christians in Corinth had been delivered from the sin of the world and God had given them so much but they were acting on the old life. Sin had crept into the church and they were disqualified to partake in the spreading of the gospel in the state they were in. Paul will now bring out some specific examples to show them how history is repeating itself between the Israelites and themselves.
v.7, 8 - Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink, and stood up to play." Nor let us act immorally, as some of them did and twenty-three thousand fell in one day.
Not long out of the clutches of the Pharoah and the Israelites were right back to idol worship and corrupt sinful practices. This event they could read about in Exodus 32.
v.9, 10 - Nor let us try the Lord, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the serpents. Nor grumble, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer.
Paul brings up Numbers 16 and 21 and the incident with the serpents and the destroyer. The Israelites were complaining about the God who had just delivered them from 400 years of slavery and providing for their every need in the wilderness. Paul is giving the Christians in Corinth some Biblical examples to read about in which they were following suit. The church in Corinth was trying God and complaining and reverting to idols and shameful sinful acts.
v.11,12 - Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.
The Bible is very significant to the life of the Christian. The standing on the Word of God and the study of it personally and corporately is essential to our walk with the Lord. "I'm a Christian, I just don't read or study or follow the Bible." The Bible is a precious gift given to us that is our primary source of knowing and following God. Our book, the Bible, is to be the book of our lives for the Christian.
v.13 - No temptation has overtaken you but such is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.
What you are going through can be found in the Bible. The solution to the temptation can be found in the pages of Scripture. The God who was faithful is still here and providing guidance and deliverance. The question is will you accept it? Will you lean on His Word to show you that "way of escape." Jesus answered the temptations of Satan in the desert with Scripture, the way of escape to Satan's suggestions. Have you thought of the way of escape as the Bible known and read and studied by you?
A temptation comes up in your life and because you are reading and studying your Bible it triggers a similar situation in the Scriptures and it provides you what to do or say because of that negative or positive example found in the Book. It was your "way of escape" to the temptation that was staring you in the face. How important is the Word of God to us being steady in our walk with the Lord.
"Lord, I think we want that way of escape to be some miraculous sign given at just the right moment that sweeps us out of harm's way but Paul is directing us today to read and study the Bible that will provide the way of escape when needed. Help us take the time today to study and read Your word knowing that it is crucial to our spiritual walk. Amen."
