1 Corinthians 1:4-9 says,...
Today's verses are 1 Corinthians 1:4-9, which read,
v.4-8 - I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus, that in everything you were enriched in Him, in all speech and all knowledge, even as the testimony concerning Christ was confirmed in you, so that you are not lacking in any gift, awaiting eagerly the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will also confirm you to the end, blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Here goes Paul again with one long run on sentence. So many thoughts that could have been separated but at the same time it is run altogether because so much hinges on each other.
The first point is that the grace of God is hinged on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The second point is everything we do and that has been done for us is connected Jesus Christ - our enriching, our speech, our knowledge, and even the testimony given of Jesus to us.
The third point is that because of our salvation in Christ Jesus, we have been given gifts by Him to be used for Him until He returns.
The fourth and final point of this long sentence is that even at the end, Jesus is there confirming you as you stand before Him.
Paul's point is that it is all about Jesus from the grace of the gift of Him through the offer of salvation to us to the grave or rapture when we see Him face to face. There is not a part of the Christian life that is not tied to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We get ourselves in danger when we think or act like there is some part of our life that is not connected to Jesus. I think this is what we are going to find in this letter. Paul is going to point out times when the Christians in Corinth have tried to put Christ into part of their lives but not in every crook and cranny.
v. 9 - God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Who is the grantor and the guardian of this long run on sentence? God. And what is the main descriptor that Paul gives us of God? God is faithful. He will fulfill what He has called you to through salvation in Jesus Christ. We may fall and stumble and outright sin but God is faithful to see to completion what has been started in you.
Can He do this? I would expect that is why we call Him God, the One able because He is God. How does all this happen? It only happens when we answer the call of salvation that only comes through God's Son that was provided named Jesus. We answer the call that Jesus is acknowledged in the deepest sense by us and in an ever increasing way to be and is the one and only Messiah of the world and our one and only Master of our lives. If I don't watch out I will be like Paul and give you another long run on sentence. I like that before Paul brings up any subject to be spoken of or correction to be made, he gives the base of all that we are because of Christ and the gospel and then goes from there.
"Lord, maybe You have given me the start of any meeting or time with the saints at Union. You are stated first and the fact of salvation before we discuss anything else. You are why we are even here. It is You before us and You present in us and You in the future that we gather in Your name. May You be praised. Amen."
