2 Corinthians 9:10-15 says,...

Today's verses are 2 Corinthians 9:10-15, which read,

v.10-12 - Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness; you will be enriched in everything for all liberality, which through us is producing thanksgiving to God.  For the ministry of this service is not only fully supplying the needs to the saints, but is also overflowing through many thanksgivings to God.

Paul is continuing to speak of the financial gift to the persecuted saints in Jerusalem.  Many of the church had lost support of work and that of their families when they made a public allegiance to Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God.  They were in need and that help was coming from God's people throughout the known world back to where the church had started.  There was still a tremendous gospel work to happen in that capital city with the gospel message so this was a very worthy cause to give cheerfully to.

Paul has been also showing the Christians in the Corinthian church that giving was more than just an act of compassion but also an obedience to God, worship of God, and witness of God.  God provides what we need physically so He supplies the seed to the sower that results in bread for food and God also supplies "the Seed," with a capital "S," for our sowing that results in others receiving "the Bread of life, who is Jesus."  You will receive something in the sowing of the gospel.  You will receive more opportunities to share/sow and to see the righteousness of God and His very provisions for your life, physically and spiritually.  All of this will result in us giving more thanksgiving to God.

The gift given was more than just for the immediate needs of the persecuted saints in Jerusalem but also a way that the Christians in Corinth could see God's provision upon their own lives and give more thanks to God for their salvation.  As we said the other day, the benefits of giving goes both ways and also upward onto God.

v.13-15 - Because of the proof given by this ministry, they will glorify God for your obedience to your confession of the gospel of Christ and for the liberality of your contribution to them and to all, while they also, by prayer on your behalf, yearn for you because of the surpassing grace of God in you.  Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!

The persecuted saints in Jerusalem were mostly Jewish believers and some were having a hard time with the fact that the gospel would be accepted by Gentiles, anyone not of the Jewish descent.  This gift from Gentile believers on behalf of the Jewish believers in Jerusalem was proof that God was at work among the Gentiles also.  It will result in the Jewish believers giving glory to God not only for the gift of provisions but also the gift of God to the Gentiles with the message of the saving gospel of Jesus Christ.  It will also result in more prayers from the Jewish believers in Jerusalem for them in Corinth and the increased efforts of the seed being sown in other areas of the known world.

Our obedience to God and His ways results in many things beyond what we can see and also in ways that are not supplied by a physical need.  God supplies so many times with things that you cannot put a dollar amount on.  I would think that the Christians in Corinth would realize that their physical monetary gift was nothing in comparison to the prayers of the persecuted Jewish believers in Jerusalem praying for them to increase in their walk with the Lord.

Paul ends this chapter and also this section of talking about giving with a point to the greatest Giver.  God gave the greatest Gift.  God is a giver.  God has given with all the principles that have been brought up here.  God gave His Son and His Son gave His life and look at all that has come of that!  Thanks be to God that one of the characteristics of God is to give.

"Lord, may our eyes and our minds been opened to see our giving as something much more than just a part of the service on Sunday.  May we have seen that it comes from the very nature of You.  If we have slackened in our giving as the Corinthians did because of allowing other things to take priority then I ask that you help us to put You and Your ways back in its rightful position so that we can give even more glory unto You.  Amen."
