Monday reflections...another great article to share...sermon video
Another great weekend and article that came across the websites that I frequent regularly. This one is titled, "10 Traits of a Humble Leader" by Moses Y. Lee. In my position as an intentional interim pastor and coaching an upcoming pastoral search team, I'm always looking for tools to help us evaluate resumes and eventually video and in person interviews. I want to give the tools to answer the question, "What should we be looking for?" Here is the link to the actual article: https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/10-traits-humble-leader/
I want to give my bullet point version of Mr. Lee's 10 points pitting the humble leader versus the arrogant leader.
- Humble leaders share resources. Arrogant leaders hoard resources.
- Humble leaders are bridge-builders. Arrogant leaders are work-a-loners.
- Humble leaders ignores gossip. Arrogant leaders spread or entertain gossip.
- Humble leaders are king-makers. Arrogant leaders are attention-seekers.
- Humble leaders celebrate others accomplishments. Arrogant leaders disregard others accomplishments.
- Humble leaders give the benefit of the doubt. Arrogant leaders assume the worst.
- Humble leaders appreciate nuances. Arrogant leaders are unwilling to consider.
- Humble leaders are empathetic, people over ideas. Arrogant leaders are rigid, ideals over compassion.
- Humble leaders welcome accountability. Arrogant leaders reject accountability.
- Humble leaders own up to mistakes. Arrogant leaders blame others.
The bold and underlined words were a way for me to see both sides of the coin. Does this person represent a humble leader or an arrogant leader? It also made me look at my own life and evaluate where I land.
Mr. Lee gives a great quote when speaking of our perfect leader, Jesus Christ.
"Jesus is not just a role model to look up to;
He's the image we're being conformed to."
We confuse our listeners of the message of our humble leader, Jesus Christ, by conforming and living our lives to the world's standards of posturing, platforming, and promoting. Mr. Lee's last paragraph gives us another important and necessary quote.
"The need for humble leadership--Christians who actually look like Christ in how they live and lead--is urgent."
Articles like Mr. Lee's helps me to see myself more clearly and also keep focus on what is important and essential in someone who leads us as Christ leads.
We venture into the book of Titus at Machias Valley Baptist Church and we will be taking a good look at the character and conduct of the leaders, the members, and the church at large. May we pattern ourselves as a church after what the Bible gives us to model.
